2017-2018 State Commander
Commander Holt served in the U.S. Navy from 1983-1994 and gained his eligibility in The American Legion during the Lebanon/Grenada Era, making him Michigan’s first post-Vietnam Era Commander. He is a member of American Legion Post 439 in Saginaw.
Brett served aboard the aircraft carriers USS America (CVA-66) & USS George Washington (CVN-73) and spent three years as a recruiter in Houston, Texas. Two of those years as Recruiter-in Charge of a five-man station.
He was a member of the commissioning crew for the USS George Washington and served as member of the ships liaison to the Newport News Shipbuilding Company.
Brett has served The American Legion in several positions at the post, district, department and national levels. Some noted positions are Post Commander, Post Adjutant, District Commander and Zone Commander.
He has also served on several department and national committees including the Department Finance Committee, Chairman of the Department Leadership College Committee, Membership Director, National Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission and National Health Administration.
Mr. Holt is a volunteer at his local Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Saginaw, MI and has over 700 volunteer hours at the facility.
Brett has also served the State of Michigan having held appointments on the Division of Deaf and Hard of Hearing board receiving his appointment from Governor Engler and re-appointment from Governor Granholm and the Barrier Free Access Design board receiving his appointment from Governor Granholm and re-appointment from Governor Snyder.
Brett is a graduate of the National Legion College in 2006 and is a member of American Legion College Alumni Association and ANAVICUS. While attending National Legion College he penned a resolution to require captions at all American Legion National Conventions which has been a standard at those conventions since 2007.
He currently resides in Saginaw, Michigan with his wife Bonnie who is a member of Unit 439 and serves the Department Auxiliary as VA Hospital Director. They have two children Barry and Jillian and two step-children Jennifer and Sam. All are members of The American Legion family.
