Samsung American Legion Scholarship Application

 

ELIGIBILITY: High school juniors who are a direct descendant, i.e. child, grandchild, great-grandchild or a legally adopted child, of a U.S. veteran who served during a period of war and is a delegate to either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program.

Baseball Scholarships

Robert Turner Baseball Scholarship Application

 

Scholarship is available only to Michigan residents who have graduated from high school, are on a 2018 American Legion Baseball Team roster filed with the National Headquarters, and who are planning to attend any nationally accredited college or university. Selection is based on the application information, the student's GPA of 2.5 or higher, and two letters of testimony (one from the American Legion coach or team manager, and the other from a community leader, school official or minister). The scholarship award amount is $500.

Any team manager or head coach of an American Legion (post – affiliated) team may nominate a player for consideration of this award. The scholarship application, letters of recommendation and certification form must be completed, postmarked and mailed to the department headquarters no later than July 15, 2018. Three letters of testimony must be attached to the nomination form.

Attach a one-page letter of recommendation from your:

 

(1) Legion coach or team manager,

(2) American Legion post commander or adjutant

(3) Community leader, (i.e. teacher, minister, Scout leader, church leader, principal)

 

Each Department Baseball Committee will select a American Legion player who best meets the qualifications as the 2018 American Legion Baseball Scholarship winner. Each department winner will receive a $500 scholarship from The American Legion.

 

DIAMOND SPORTS SPONSORSHIP

The Department Baseball scholarship winners shall be considered for The American Legion All Academic Team sponsored by Diamond Sports, the official baseball for American Legion National tournaments. Eight players selected by a scholarship selection committee at The American Legion World Series will receive an additional $2,500 scholarship. A ninth player, selected as the most outstanding member of the All Academic Team, will be awarded an additional $5,000 scholarship.

 

Scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive their scholarships immediately upon graduation from an accredited high school. Scholarship winners must utilize the total award within eight (8) years of their graduation date, excluding active military duty.

The scholarship may be used to attend a school selected by the student, provided it is state accredited and above the high school level.

The national treasurer of The American Legion will make disbursement from the scholarship fund jointly to the student and the school at the beginning of each semester.

Oratorical Contest Scholarships

Oratorical Contest Information & Registration  2017/18 Official Rules

 

The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program "A Constitutional Speech Contest"

 

The American Legion Oratorical contests can be financially as well as educationally rewarding. High School students who are U. S. citizens or lawful residents can hone their speaking skills, while learning about the U.S. Constitution.

Department level scholarship awards range from $800 to $1500, with Zone runner-ups receiving $200. At the National level they range from $14,000 to $18,000.

 

A contestant must register with their American Legion, Department of Michigan by November 18, 2017 (see registration form attached to information sheet).  Your Zone Chairman will notify you of the dates, times and locations of all contests at the District and Zone level.  All Zone contests will be conducted before Monday, January 29, 2018.

 

The Department contest will be conducted on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, at 1:00 pm. Anyone is welcome to attend. There will be opportunities to take photographs at the awards ceremony, but not during the actual contest. If space permits, an unattended, tripod mounted video camera may tape the entire contest, but not a single contestant.  The American Legion, Department of Michigan reserves the right to preclude any videotaping if it prevents the audience present from fully enjoying the contest.

 

Most Posts have information available and a student should contact a local American Legion Post, (ask Zone Chairman to suggest Post), and ask for sponsorship.

Eagle Scout of the Year Scholarship

The American Legion Life Insurance Committee provides for a National Scholarship to be awarded to the Eagle Scout who is selected “The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year.” The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will receive an $10,000 scholarship. Three second-place scholarship awards will be given in the amount of $2,500 each. The scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive their scholarships immediately upon graduation from a state accredited high school (public, parochial, military, private, or home school) and must utilize the total award within four (4) years of their graduation date, excluding active military duty.

 

Along with the opportunity to win the National Scholarship, the Department Eagle Scout of the Year receives $1,000 from The American Legion, Department of Michigan.

 

The scholarship may be used to attend a school selected by the student providing it is state accredited, above the high school level, and within the continental limits of the United States, except in the case where the student may be from a possession of the United States, in which case he can select a school in that possession or in the continental United States.

 

Disbursement from the scholarship fund will be made jointly to the student and the school at the beginning of each semester or quarter. However, only one request will be honored per semester or quarter.

 

Deadline date to department headquarters is March 1, 2018.

These will be awarded for 2018 program at the Michigan State Police Training Academy on Canal Road in Lansing .

 

In partnership with the Michigan State Police, this program will teach young men and women about a career in law enforcement.  If a student is interested about a career in law enforcement or is not sure, they should attend this program.

 

You will learn:

  • Proper gun safety while live-firing handguns under the supervision of the Michigan State Police firing range officers.
  • Self-defense techniques
  • The adrenaline rush of underwater rescue and recovery in the training center pool
  • Crash site investigation
  • First aid
  • Police K-9 units and their incredible abilities
  • Basic “CSI- Crime Scene Investigations”
  • Intense physical training (Yes, you will run!)
  • How to work as a team
