HANCOCK, MICH – The Alfred Erickson American Legion Post 186 and Auxiliary held a fundraiser for the Coast Guard Station Portage families who are not receiving pay during the government shutdown.  The collection was held on January 19, 2019 from 1pm to 4 pm at the post home.  The event was organized just a few days before and was advertised on the local radio stations, WLUC TV6, and on Facebook.

Items requested were:  gift cards, gas cards, household items, and baby items.  The post received an overwhelming response from the community – from individuals, businesses, police and fire, and other veterans.  Individual post and auxiliary members also gave very generous donations and helped out at the event.  We received everything we requested and more.  Approximately $8,500 in gift cards and cash donations were received along with approximately $1,000 in household and baby items.  All donations were immediately gifted to the Coast Guard families and were greatly appreciated.

The Alfred Erickson American Legion Post 186 would like to thank everyone who donated.

Post 186 Auxiliary President Debra Guilbault, Post 186 Commander Ron Olson,  Williams-Giroux Post 90 Auxiliary President Bobbie DeRoche (American Legion Williams-Giroux Post 90 of Lake Linden was first in line to make a donation for the Coast Guard families.
