Do you have a drive to help Veterans outside of your American Legion Post?
As American Legion members we have a strong desire to give back to our community and to our fellow Veterans. There are Veterans who need assistance, as volunteers our time and abilities could be limited, but having choices is always helpful.
Where does a Legionnaire start to volunteer?
Start with your American Legion Post. If you have not inquired about the programs they support (each post is different) then just ask. They might have a group that volunteers at various places already.
Opportunities in Michigan
Michigan is home to five Veteran Administration Medical Facilities, several Community Based Outreach Centers (CBOC's), two Veteran Administration National Cemeteries, and two State Veteran Homes.
VA Volunteer Services
The American Legion has supported and actively participated in the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) program since it began in 1946. Today, nearly 7,000 volunteers serve 900,000 hours annually at various VA medical centers. Get started at va.gov/volunteer.
Adopt a National Guard or Reserve Unit
Posts throughout the country are encouraged to connect with local National Guard and reserve units to learn about the many ways volunteers can assist.

Michigan Freedom Centers
Michigan does not have a USO presence at our airports. Several years ago pilots from United Airlines proposed a center for Veterans and Military personnel to use while traveling through Detroit Metro Airport. They now have three sites and are always looking for volunteers to help with the mission.

Don't forget to track your volunteer hours and report them to your post adjutant for recording on the post consolidated post report. (What is a Consolidated Post Report?)
